Fire Thought for the Day 001
Fire Season Will Soon Be Here
As you go about your travels over the next while, take the time to give thought to the up and coming fire season. With snow still on the ground fire season seems like it is a far off thing. It is closer than we all realize.
-What is the status of your equipment?
-Has your Engine been started yet this spring? Give it some exercise.
-Have you been thinking about your high-risk areas? Take the time to do this.
-As you travel along the roads discuss the fuel types you see. Practice.
-Think about what course of action you will need to take if a fire were to start in certain areas of your district.
-Think about what your role might be on any given fire.
-Give thought to roads leading into high-risk areas, are there bridges, and if so, will they support an Engine’s weight. Are there wash outs leading into the high-risk areas that will need to be dealt with. Can two Engines meet and pass on these roads. Is there a place to turn at the end of these roads?
-Is your personal fire gear in good shape and ready to go?
-Have you looked at your red books? Practice.
-When you get your pre suppression plans back, take the time to look at them.
-Remember LACES and what it stands for. Practice.
-Take the time to look at the 18 watch out situations.
-Take time to look at the 10 standard fire fighting orders. Practice.
-Take the time to look over your binders and notes of courses you have been on. Practice.
-Take the time to learn about Bill C-45, type Bill C-45 in your search engines and you will find a world of information.
In these times of contract negotiations and unsettled work environments, remember, when the fires occur, you will still respond. Prepare yourself mentally and physically for what you may face.
As much as time allows, I intend to send out fire thoughts for the day. I won’t likely be able to do it every day, however, as much as I can.
Please note that I am doing this at home in the evenings so as not to detract from work.
Remember, “Fire is not prejudice…it will try to burn anything…including you.”
We can replace a tree or a home, no one wants to see these things burn, however, there is only one you. One burn over is one too many it should never happen. It is just not acceptable.
Until next time, above all else, Stay Safe! Tex March 17, 2005 23:40 hours
