Fire Thought For The Day
Complacency
Everyone, who knows me, knows I love to cook. Well sir, leave it to me to come up with a comparison between wildland fire and cooking.
Today, I was cooking my family and me an old fashioned stew. This is one of my specialties. I thought to myself this is going to be some kind of good.
It was simmering away while I was typing away as usual, yet another fire thought for the day, then I decided I had better go check the stew to make sure that it was cooking just right. My mind was on my fire thought for the day. I lifted the cover off the stew pot, I couldn’t wait to smell the fragrance, and then it happened. Lightning fast, without warning, what a BONE HEAD I can be some times!
I have done this a 1000 time before without incident. I love the smell of stew. I automatically bent over to smell the stew, with my mind on something other than it should have been. As I took a large smell of the stew a cloud of very hot steam hit me in the face. Now then, I didn’t burn my nostrils bad; just enough to make me jerk away with pain very rapidly. Like I said, BONE HEAD!
I immediately thought, after the air turned less blue, another fire thought for the day.
Something I have done many times, without incident, all of a sudden reminded me, the hard way, to keep my mind on my work.
The next time I checked the stew I was a lot more careful. Yet, I had to get hurt in order to remind myself of the fact that things can go wrong very quickly.
When we are on the fires, let’s keep our mind on our work. Let’s not have to learn this the hard way. There is always time for the other thoughts after the fire.
I know we have all gone to fires many times in the past without incident. I know we have all got complacent from time to time. On a fire there is no room for complacency. Let’s stay focused out there folks. Let’s not have to get hurt in order to take the time to do things right.
